Be careful not to waste money
In the United States (including Canada) it is no longer legal to sell supplements containing the specific strain of Monascus purpureus used in the studies detailing the benefits of red yeast rice. You can still buy red yeast rice supplements in your local health food store; however, these supplements are produced using a different strain of yeast or fermentation process than those used in the studies. The red yeast rice products may have little or no cholesterol-lowering effects. Why a company would profit off of innocent ignorance is beyond me.

really works quite well
Lowered my cholesterol 60 to 100 pts depending on the measurement, in conjunction with Enduracin brand Niacin, better than either did alone by a lot.

But both need MD monitoring; and this IS a statin by its nature.

Consumer Lab rates this as the highest/purest monacolin content (active lovastatin type ingredient) and found no dangerous citrinin impurity.

Im an MD. I recommend it as long as you work with your own MD

Better than statins
Red Yeast Rice has brought my cholesterol level down lower than it has ever been and there are no side effects. I am really pleased with this product.

Don't shop at Vitamin Shoppe-product descriptions poor
Although the product (Nature's Plus red yeast rice) is high quality, the Vitamin Shoppe's website does not disclose correct info about the strength. They sold me mini-tabs (half strength) while their website makes no mention of this in the product description. I suggest you not do business with this company.

Reducing blood cholesterol
I have taken Nature's Plus red yeast rice for about a year now. Before taking, my blood cholesterol was 252 mg/dL. After 8 months on Nature's Plus, my next test showed a blood cholesterol level of 198 mg/dL. That's impressive! I have not had a followup test to confirm though. Additionally, Nature's Plus is one of the only ones that is taken only once each day. Most other brands recommend one or two tablets twice a day. This timed release approach seems to work best.
