JVC DR-MV80B - DVD recorder/ VCR combo

I bought this to transfer VCR tapes to DVD's. I was able to use the unit and made good Viedo DVD's with excellent sound quality.

I bought this device to record VHS home movies onto DVDs and it works great. It also works well as a dual DVD/VHS player. I haven't tried much else with it, like recording from the TV, so I gave it 4 stars. Also, the menu can be a tad cumbersome, but the manual does explain it, so if you have a minute it's no big deal, especially for the price you pay. I'm glad I bought it.

I've had this unit now for about 2 months. My goal in buying the unit was 2 fold. #1 I wanted and needed to transfer VHS to dvd. #2 I wanted a decent quality vcr to replace well pretty much all my vcr's that aren't working now at a reasonable price. This machine so far has delivered. While I don't think any dvd, vhs or combo quite have as many functions or lives up to the more heavy duty units of the past (my Magnavox lasted 25 years and only died do to surge from storm recently) I was pleasantly surprised that this unit doesn't seem real cheesy like most. To me this was simple to operate right out of the box being familiar with other similar machines. It does not have a tuner built in but I didn't need or want this. Personally I think units with built in tuners are a waste of time and you can't get all the channels they would apparently have you believe. I prefer the built in hard drive which all but went away when the units with built in tuners came out. My only peeve about the unit is that when I transfer VHS I am having a difficult time figuring out how to create chapters? This may have to be done while in transfer process but if this is the case it devalues the unit somewhat so I gave ease of use 4 stars. It gives the indication you can do it after but I'll have to read and see if I missed something. So far all my transfers have one long chapter but its still better than VHS convenience wise but still preferrable to have chapters. The only other thing I can think of that would have been a nice feature would have been a fast dub feature but I guess thats pusshing it. I hope these are available for a while. Seems these are quickly fading into oblivion even though it seems theres still seems to be a demand. Good unit JVC. Thanks.

I was truly disappointed when I opened the box to find it did not have a coax output even though it specifically stated that it did.

Where the coax output should be is just another stereo type output so if you are purchasing this for an older tv be warned you will need an adapter to use this machine

I have owned this unit for over a month now, and have recorded several TV shows and dubbed home VHS tapes to DVD (and vice versa)without any problems. Picture quality is excellent! On-screen menu is easy to figure out and navigate through, and the remote control user friendly as well. I also like the fact that you can watch a DVD and record a program onto VHS at the same time! Keep in mind the following: This unit does NOT have a tuner in it, so you cannot record one program and watch another at the same time. But as long as you attach the video cables from your cable or satellite box to the unit, it will record your desired channel. If you want to use the timer, make sure to leave the tuner on and turn the TV off before you leave so it will record your program. Also, it will not record premium movie channels on DVD, due to copy protection. It will, however, record them onto VHS. You just won't be able to dub them to DVD due to copy protection. Overall, I am very satisfied with this unit and highly recommend it.
