![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Solid internet radio
This is a pretty solid product with a few minor drawbacks depending on your needs.
I set this up for my mom. It took me some time to set up, but now she has 8 presets she can access via the remote, and they play over her stereo. If that's what you need, this will work fine. If you want a different radio station every day you might get frustrated. Pros: Easily connects to WPA wireless 8 radio presets (well, 8 internet and 8 fm) Fine sound quality, connects to stereo system or has its own speaker Nice styling Remote control No computer needed Remembers what you were last listening to when you turn it on. Cons: Takes a minute or so to connect. Changing channels isn't easy, especially since there are so many internet radio stations. It would be nice if the display was a little wider to fit radio station names. Also, you can filter by genre and location, but still sit there side scrolling for a couple of minutes waiting for the Zs. As people have said, the presets are really jumpy. It's easy to accidentally assign a preset when trying to switch to a station You can work around this by using the remote, which isn't nearly so finicky. (Also, I figured out you have to tap, not hold, the shift button for presets 5-8) Would be improved with: Fixing the presets A "random" option to explore A wider display 2008-12-26
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pretty good internet radio
This is a pretty good internet radio but not perfect. It is best suited and probably intended as a bedside clock radio. However, you can hook it up to your stereo system as it has right and left audio outlets on the back. The biggest drawback is that it is hard to read the display unless you are directly in front and pretty much level with the display panel. It has a remote that works fine but you can't read the display if you are too far away either so it is limited. For my use it is OK since I do want to hook it up to my stereo system and once it is connected to a station I pretty much leave it there. I do like the that you can add internet radio stations to the memory of the radio via their reciva.com web site. It would be very awkward to try and do that with the limited display on the radio itself.
It does freeze up once in a while and you either have to turn it off or if that fails unplug it for a few minutes and it is operational again. Part of that problem could be that I only have a slower DSL internet connection and it is not keeping up downloading the stream from the respective stations. I should probably stick to stations that stream at less than 128 kbps. So you should keep in mind the the type of internet connection you have and if you would be limited to some extent to what stations you can listen to easily. All in all it is a pretty good radio with a decent speaker and most of the features that you would want to have in an internet radio. 2008-12-17
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great sound, Line out, but really needs some software fixes!
I already have a Wi-Fi Internet radio (Grace) but I needed another radio for my bedroom with an alarm clock feature, wireless remote, and sleep timer. First off, this radio sounds great except for the really compressed music streams. I've tested the internal speakers and connected the radio to my home stereo system. Both sounded impressive, especially so when using the line out connection on back! It looks great and the buttons feel solid, not cheap quality whatsoever.
Unfortunately, this company really needs to release a new firmware update. The radio automatically connects to the reciva.com website for new stations and it also has the ability to update the firmware for free once the manufacturer, Revo, comes out with a new version. Problem is, they haven't yet, and this radio has some annoying little "qwirks". Holding on a preset button to set it to the current station being played is tricky... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but instead takes you to the station that was previously saved on that button. Trust me, about 3 or 4 times of this back and forth will drive you crazy! Other issues include a really slow startup time to finally connect to the network (or switch from FM to Internet Radio mode). About 25% of the time, it fails to connect and requires you to turn the unit off and then back on and wait some more. The third major issue is that sometimes it just resets (power cycles) on its own for no explained reason right in the middle of playing a station! There are a number of other strange minor things, but overall these are at the top of my list for must-fix. I gave this radio 3 out of 5 stars because it has great potential and I'm very optimistic that once these irritating software bugs are finally worked out, this will be a killer radio! I already want to buy a second one to leave connected to the home stereo via Line Out, but I hesitate until this company demonstrates their commitment to this product by putting out a new software version as quickly as possible! If you are considering buying one for yourself, I would get it. But there is no way this radio is simple and stable enough to give to grandma! :) 2008-12-15
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The blik has the worst user experience ever
Hi, I just bought the blik a couple of months ago and I must say I don't use it anymore because using it is so awful.
The blik is a FM and Wifi Radio. The speakers are acceptable kitchen radio quality. you can hook it up to your pc a stream mp3 via media player 11, but I haven't bothered to test that after my experience with the wifi mode. If you only listen to 4 stations throughout your whole life the blik is for you. If you like more variety in your listening, the blik is just awful. changing station in fm mode is already a pain, in wifi mode it is even worse. it takes felt 1-2 minutes to change a station. To my knowledge there is no scan mode in FM mode, neither auto nor manual. so you have to press the seek button in .5 increments. changing stations with the remote is even worse. in fm mode its clumsy, in wfi mode it is impossible to go to a new station without sitting in front of the blik to view the display.... then what do you need a remote for ? there is no filtering, so whenever you want to change a station in wifi mode, you have to start from scratch, select the country with "right" and "left" buttons, scrolling 150 countries one at a time is my favorite past time. then select genre, scrolling one at a time. then the station. depending on the country here it loads 6000 stations, which takes a while. if you want to listen to music from Australia with the US currently set, you will start to love the Blik! there are only 4 station store buttons. (you can use 4 more by pressing Shift-Station, but who on earth wants to press two buttons every time? If you are looking for a radio that operates literally as easy as a radio, do not buy the blik. 2008-12-08
