Sangean DT-400W AM/FM Digital Weather Alert Pocket Radio

My observations of this pocket sized radio is viewed by someone who is coming from a non technical background. I was looking for a good quality small portable that pulled in the usual stations contiguous to the south jersey area and had a small speaker along with the headphone walkman capability.

First of all the weight is a little too heavy to carry in a shirt pocket. I tried it and was very conscious of its placement. The belt clip is a much better option.

The built-in speaker is louder than you would think based on some of the reviews. Of course the quality does no match when a good headphone is used. However it is quite clear although on the sharp side for such a tiny internal speaker

I had to call Sangean customer service 1 888 SANGEAN . I was surprised they had a rather small staff and I had to wait longer then I liked. I was having a problem presetting the stations but I got good instructions and programmed them on the spot while still on the phone.

So far I am pleased with the quality of this little gem. I hope it works in my favorite casino.

I've been fascinated by small transistor radios ever since I received my first one in 1960. It was AM only, had a long telescopic antenna, two transistors, and cost the equivalent of more than $100. today! Did I mention it ate expensive 9 volt batteries in little more than an hour and was so poorly constructed it only lasted a couple months even with fanatical care? LOL.
How times have changed; this radio is a delight to use--as simple as it gets--and performance is on par with anything on the market that will receive AM and FM without an external antenna (FM and NOAA works best with the shorter earphone wires). AM performance in particular is brilliant with exceptional stability sensitivity and selectivity. I get usable signals from all over the eastern half of the country at night--even one up in Toronto, Canada! FM performance is more in line with fine stereo reproduction including somewhat wider than necessary selectivity and fairly easy overload by strong local signals but still as good as all but a dedicated FM tuner. The seven NOAA channels are the perfect replacement for the TV band included in the previous model and the emergency auto alert function can be tested at noon every Wednesday when a test signal is sent out.
Construction and form factor is excellent as expected from Sangean. The only thing I'd change is to have FM tune (both manually and with auto scan) to odd numbered frequencies only as that is where the channels are centered; also an alarm clock function would have been nice. Otherwise this is as good as you'll likely ever find in a pocket radio at any price.
UPDATE: After using this radio for a while I can add that it is capable of producing marvelous sound quality with a strong FM signal and good earphones. In particular Denon C751 earbuds sound simply sublime and notably better than any MP3 player I've ever owned!

This is one of the best little pocket radio's I have ever owned. About the size of a deck of cards, and with a good set of ear phones it sounds really great. Reception is good here in LA, but we have allot of local stations and am not sure how it'll work on weak signals.

I consider this radio a little on the expensive side, but is made well and should last a long time. The small speaker works, but does not sound very good. So if you plan on using the speaker rather than ear buddies. Pass this little jewel over, but if planning on using ear phones, this is the one to buy.

I'm not much with words. Suffice it to say that this is my 3rd Sangean radio. They are simply the best on the market. I see it will be necessary to purchase anothr one, my wife confiscated this one.
