Good Starter Unit!!!
I don't buy the other reviews this amp has received. Those users must have been doing something wrong!!! My JVC pushed loud and hard for years. I only got rid of it due to an upgrade to 6.1 speakers.

DTS and Dolby sound from my DVD through an Optical line gave fantastic results. This unit can handle 5.1 just fine...I think the other user must have something wrong with his DVD player!

This amp was my first along my Home Theater journey...and it was a great first step! There are features I miss and wish I had in my current amp!

Two Strikes
I bought this receiver as part of a discount "bundle" (w/speakers) at a large retail chain store. The receiver has "fried" twice now. The first failure required extensive downtime while the power supply was sent back to the manufacturer. I'm not waiting on the third failue--I'll be buying another brand.

Faulty equipment at best
I bought this machine as part of a home theatre package at Cambridge Soundworks in Boston. When I hooked it up (with the digital optical connection) to my Toshiba DVD player, it wouldn't reproduce any sound for the first 2 min. When it finally began decoding surround sound signals, it would promptly stop and not play for another two min. whenever the disc was paused or fast-forwarded, etc (basically, whenever normal 'play' operation was interrupted). Customer service claimed to have no idea what the problem was, and an exchange for another machine of the same model made no difference, leading me to believe that the JVC machine can't handle 5.1-channel decoding well at all. I finally exchanged it for the comparable Sony model that Cambridge Soundworks offers with this package, and haven't had any problems since. What's more, the Sony, which only lists at 80 watts/channel, as opposed to JVC's 100 watts.ch, delivered cleaner sound, more bass, and better overall performance. The 100 watt/ch. claim is nonsense. A lousy machine overall, and one which has convinced me to avoid JVC products in the future. A poor display from a company with such grand claims...
