HD Radio
I've always enjoyed good radio, but in recent years radio in the home has become poor, maybe because of cheap quality tuners in receivers?
I tried to read as much as I could about HD radio before taking the plunge and chose the Sangean HDT-1X based on features.
I use it along with an "FM Reflect Antenna I got from [...] - great combination. Our area can be tricky for radio with lots of hills and valleys, but this radio is excellent. The nice thing with digital radio is that if it gets a signal, then its a good signal. Doesn't seem to be any weak signals at all. AM reception is also excellent - I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed AM. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good radio - simply hook the RCA outputs to an aux input on your receiver, or use the fiber optic output, which I did.

HD Radio is a big disappointment!
If you can tell the difference between an MP3 and a CD then DO NOT buy an HD Radio tuner. Use the money to improve your analog radio reception; a Magnum Dynalab ST-2 antenna is about $100.

The Sangean does what it is supposed to: deliver a compressed, lossy data stream at 192 kbps. CD bitrate is 1411 kbps. This product, like all HD tuners achieves its quiet, "black" background by omitting all audible material above 10,000 Hz. Your speakers can deliver and hopefully your ears should still hear up to 20,000 Hz.

Great HD tuner
Pros: Awesome sound
Cons: Remote is lame
I have the units antennae multiplexed off of my TERK antennae mounted on my Directv antennae. I live half way between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale and all the FM station strengths are maxed out. The AM signals are week with the loop antennae supplied. I use the optical output into my receiver and the sound is crystal clear and amazing.
You need to be directly in front of unit for the remote to work and it has bubble buttons that you have to press hard. This is minor but a little pain.
If you are looking for a HD tuner this is a good choice because of the optical audio out and the unit does not generate excess heat.

Sangean HDT-1X HD/AM/FM Radio Component Tuner. The tuner arrived promptly. in good shape and as advertized. I have had no problems with operation and as far as I can tell it does everything it is supposed, to.

At last - the only affordable component HD receiver
Things I like about having this HD reciever:
- HD sound quality
- HD signal reception -- I can pull in all kinds of stations I couldn't get before
- More programming (i.e. HD1 is usually the same, but others are additional programs)
------ (sometimes HD2 or even HD3 on some - one local station has rock on their HD1, Blues on their HD2)
- Extra HD stations are usually advertisement free (at least for now)
- some surprisingly good programming - even innovative

As for the reciever itself -- I like that it's a component I can plug into my stereo, not a table-top radio. I also like that it doens't cost thousands. Right now, it has no competition in this space.

Things I don't like:
- Channel presets (i.e. to select station #6) require two key strokes, not one (dumb)
- the unit's power supply hums (quietly, but still)

Things I love:
- it's ability to pull in all these marginal signals and sound great
- the remote control
- the HD search (finds only HD stations) separate from the full search (finds both regular and HD)
