great receiver easy to set-up lots of options
My old Gateway DVD system died but the speakers were good so I was looking for an inexpensive system to connect to our 400 cd changer and plasma tv. This one fit the bill with lots of hookup options and a really great choice of input and output options. Caution - this model does not have the Sirius and XM ports. It also puts out a lot of heat. The remote is super and even controls our Time Warner box

Perfect product for the money
Bought this item to replace an ailing NAD T640 5.1 Home Theater Receiver which I dearly loved (when it worked). It was clean and powerful which I need to power my floor-standing Polk speakers. But, I should have made the switch sooner!! I was looking for a replacement that would give me the most bang for my buck and after weeks of research narrowed it down to the Onkyo TX-SR505. WOW, what a bargain at $234! Had it swapped out and fine-tuned in less than half an hour, tested all the features the first evening, and it's every bit as clean and powerful as my old NAD and offers features I always wished my NAD had. I listen to a lot of music and I love that the Onkyo delivers stereo to my front and rear floor-standing Polks. Has an excellent speaker setup system which worked perfectly on the first try. Has been in constant use for two months now and no problems. And I don't know what other people are talking about when they mention it runs hot...mine is enclosed in an audio rack and I listen to it extremely loud...and it has never gotten more than slightly warm. If you're simply looking for great surround sound and music you won't be disappointed.

great sound system for a great price
i recently purchased this unit after buying two other, more expensive and more complicated systems.

i first bought the Sony str-dg810 6.1 channel receiver, and much to my dismay it was an awful receiver. i returned it for the Harmon Kardon avr-147 and while it was an upgrade, it still lacked the sound quality. i finally ended up purchasing this receiver and i was pleasently surprised. for the price, you get a good receiver with good sound quality, and a decent picture. if you are looking for top end, than this isn't for you. however, if you don't want to shell out a grand, i would buy this before buying the other "made in china" receivers!!

A little odd........
I purchased this receiver to run HDMI to my 37" LCD TV from my PS3 and HD-DVD player. After getting everything hooked up, I was ready to give it a whirl, then........no audio. For whatever reason, this receiver doesn't transmit the audio to the television, via HDMI. You're forced to either use an AV cable, or a digital audio cable.

I'm not too technical savvy, but I'm pretty sure that HDMI was designed to do both & found it odd that it did not.

I'm not giving the receiver a great review because of this. I'm not giving it an unfavorable review because with a little adjusting, I can still use the receiver.

Be careful and pay a little closer attention when researching receivers for your home entertainment purposes than I did. I knew I wanted 2 HDMI in ports and needed just one HDMI out, and again, not being too tech savvy, I guess I didn't know that it split off the audio and video.

Hopefully no one makes the same mistake I did.
