Onkyo TX-SR505
Bought this reciever to go with Klipsch Quintet II speakers I also purchased on this site. I purchased the reciever for $199.00 and am very pleased. I see a lot of reviews that rate this product bad because the HDMI is video only, both this site and Onkyo's website state that HDMI is pass through only, there is not any reciever in this price range that has true HDMI capabilities so I do not understand their bad reviews. Anyway, my system is set up in a room 15x15 and I have added a simple Sony 100watt sub I recieved from my brother and the quality and clarity of sound far exceeds my expectations!!! My brother commented that this system easily compares to the one he has in his basement with Bose speakers. He is currently looking into purchasing this reciever or possibly the SR605 also from Onkyo. I found the Onkyo very simple to setup and very user friendly. If you are looking for great mid level home theater and music listening experiences at entry level price, then this Onkyo is for you!!! Would easily reccomend this unit to anyone!!!

Disappointing Quality and Service
Purchased this Onkyo TX- SR505 for Christmas. Onkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Discovered it had an intermittent video problem. Contacted Onkyo NJ in March to get warranty service. They insisted the unit be sent to a service facility in Syracuse NY. The cost to me was almost 30% of the purchase price. Amazon was no help either. As I explained to Onkyo, the problem takes hours to appear and disappear and surely no one is going to spend that much time troubleshooting the receiver economically. Onkyo should have offered to exchange the defective one for a new one as I requested.

I was also disappointed by the lack of pre amp outputs. The HDMI, component and video outputs are all pass through. That means it only outputs a video signal if that is the type it receives. It has no on screen status reporting thus it is very difficult to use in a remote location.

Purchased a Onkyo DVD Changer at the same time. It too has problems as it skips and stops. It also drops disks below the turntable.

Have not had good luck with my Onkyo or Amazon electronic purchases. I can't recommend either.

Excellent
I am very happy with this product - update to the previous 505 with the addition of HDMI switching.

The sound is great and the setup was very easy. One note if you are only attaching 5 speakers, the rear speakers should be connected to the surround r and surrount l posts and not rear l and rear r. This makes the autosetup work properly (otherwise you get an error message).

Looking for an inexpensive HDMI-capable receiver?
If you're in the market for an inexpensive HDMI-capable receiver, then this might be your best choice. As many of you audiophiles can attest, having to upgrade your receiver to accommodate newer formats, additional speaker sets, and expand the number of video and audio inputs can often be a costly hassle. Look no further than the Onkyo TX-SR505 to assuage your worries and surpass your expectations for the next generation of 7.1 Channel Home Theater receviers.

I was thoroughly impressed with the out-of-the-box ease of set up, including the speaker attenuation process with the included microphone. Two HDMI inputs which handle video distribution should take care of you first-gen Hi-Def afficianados. Colored speaker labels, a multitude of surround sound playback options, multiple digital audio inputs, a well thought-out owner's manual and comprehensive details listed on the web assured me that I made the right choice in making the TX-SR505 my Home Theater President, CEO and Managing Director.

Not too many bells and whistles to overwhelm the casual listener, but definitely recommendeded for the serious couch potato. The remote control offers so many expansion capabilities. My only gripe is that the individual speaker volume levels sometime reset themselves, depending upons which surround playback option I choose and I have to go back in and re-calibrate them to my preferred level.

Overall, 4 out of 5 stars, or 8 out of 10.

nice
After researching and looking for 2months I decided on the 505[$269 at CC] and hooked them to my new polk rm750 5.1 speaker system. I was a little concerned with the 505 watts per channel. Not to worry.Plenty of power for a normal size room.It brings out the best in the polk's.I like the many listening modes I can choose from. The manual does a nice job explaining what mode fits best with what your watching but I wish it would suggest what mode to watch a game in.The speaker hookups are a little frustrating but be patient, good thing's take time. For about $550 I have a nice system that will last. It beats the Pioneer HTIB I had for 10 years.I listened to a Jeff Beck song on sirrus net work, cranked it up to 40 or so ,very nice.Be patient and look for the sales.
