Love it, but get the XL if you have the extra $$$
I have had Tivo service for 6 years now and absolutely love it. I bought the HD for Christmas to go with our new TV and digital cable service. I didn't realize I would have to then pay for cable cards from the cable company which adds another $10 per month to our bill. It's $5 per card and with a double tuner that's 10. Ugh! Ok, so got over that and decided it was worth it. NOW... I'm realizing I should have just thrown in the extra couple hundred bucks for the XL because 20 hours of HD programming fills up F A S T!!! Things start deleting that we haven't watched yet and it gets frustrating. I LOVE Tivo but my advice is go big or go home. Go for the XL if you plan on recording HD programs. If you are recording regular shows off the lower channels then this will be just perfect for you (although you might just stick with the regular Tivo dual tuner instead of HD).
I wouldn't trade Tivo for the world, but I'm wishing I would have been thinking BIG!

tivo hd
Works great.
Only issue was cablecard - it took Comcast 3 visits to get it right.

HD & HDXL is now old news...
I purchased the Tivo HD with the intent of grabbing OTA HD channels and saving a few bucks from feeding the cable hogs. Unfortunately I never got a chance. For me, it had everything to do with grabbing OTA HD channels. After multiple antenna purchases, I just couldn't get all the local channels that were strong enough to be an equivalent (or better) replacement option. Granted, this is no fault of the Tivo unit.
So I returned it. And I was disappointed to do so because I was looking forward to the change. But an outdoor antenna is not an option (live in apartment) so what is done is done.
The only other thing I might mention is the Tivo HD and HDXL is now old news. The new Premiere is the newest thing to have. Amazon carries them and you can pre-order them (they don't ship until first part of April).
