Lacks Audio Outputs
This DVD player has a lot going for it. It is reasonably priced, compact, attractive, easy to use, produces a great picture, etc. It's a shame Sony decided not to provide 5.1 audio output either digitally by optical output or via the analog output. There is no optical output from this player and the analog output is stereo only. It is normal to include at least one of these 5.1 outputs on any modern player and it is not at all clear on the web page description that they are not included. If you have pre-HDMI receiver (as I do), there is no way to connect this DVD player to your (or to my very excellent) theater system for 5.1 sound reproduction.

As a result I had to return this DVD player to Amazon.

If you're not ready to overspend for Blu-ray...
...then this is for you. My 9 year old friend (a Toshiba) finally bit the dust and it was time for a new player. I have tons of DVDs and only a 19 inch LCD right now. I plan on getting a 30+ inch for the living room someday, but this player makes for the perfect bedroom TV companion. Some people have mentioned some quality issues, but unless I experience those issues for myself, I'm comfortable with giving it 5 stars.

I'm sure it would also lock great on a big guy, though still not Blu-ray quality. But I must say, the difference in picture quality is not yet worth the difference in cost. Remember, it's not just the player. Blu-rays are also more expensive than DVDs. I don't see much point in buying the Blu-ray version of something unless it's a Hollywood blockbuster with special effects (and actually FILMED in HD)!

Great DVD Player
Worked like a Sony even plays all of my recorded DVD's unlike my previous Samsung DVD recorder player which I spent more money on. This DVD player works great. The only thing I feel missing is a open close button for the DVD's. Other then that its been playing DVD's reliable like a DVD player should.

Love that Sony!
Until Blu-Ray players get under $100, this player is the way to go. Besides, by the time they do, there'll be a new technology to replace Blu-Ray, so why spend the extra $$?

I'm happy with the unit and with Amazon's service.

Pleasantly surprised
When I first hooked up this dvd to our 1080p tv I didn't realize that I did it incorrectly and wasn't really satisfied with the image quality. I figured I'd make do with what I got. It wasn't until months later when I was rearranging furniture that I saw what I did wrong and boy am I glad I fixed it. I had everything plugged in correctly but I didn't choose the correct input on the tv. The picture quality was so much better! My father liked it so much that he went out and bought another one for his tv as well. I have a bluray player as well and while it isn't the same quality it sure as hell comes close to it. It's small..lightweight and doesn't heat up even after hours of usage. I also thought that not having the eject button kind of sucked but then I realized that even on older dvd players I've had I never used it anyway lol. I guess people just don't want to press the buttons on the player itself because in the long run it might mess up and stop working. That is also understandable because it's happend to me on other electronic equipment....so stop picking on the people in here who complain about no eject button. We're here to write reviews about the product not write reviews about our reviews.
